Gaur Gopal Das
One of the most popular and sought-after monks in the world, Gaur Gopal Das shares his wisdom in this light-hearted yet thought-provoking book that will help you align yourself with the life you want to live.
What’s it about?
From the sacred realms of spirituality, ISKCON’s monk Gaur Gopal Das has attained worldwide recognition for his spirituality based motivational courses and lectures on social media platforms.
In his debut book, Life’s Amazing Secrets, Das offers an ideal framework of solutions for the people of this modern age whose vehicle of life has become stuck in the traffic jam of everyday problems.
Carefully combining soul-stirring anecdotes with his lessons, the book is based on a conversation that takes place between Das and his rich friend Harry while traversing through Mumbai’s traffic.
Exposing the dark side of life, the monk pertinently remarks that behind the smiles, everyone is going through personal struggles we know nothing about. Even though Harry is surrounded by worldly luxuries, he’s going through an emotional turmoil, often failing to balance his work and marriage at the same time.
Drawing on the analogy of a car, Das explains that our life also runs on four wheels- personal life, relationships, career and social contribution. It is important that we maintain all these aspects of our life in order to avoid the risk of our “car” breaking down. He then goes on to providing us with a pathway of solutions to maintaining these different wheels of life
What I liked about the book?
If you’re on social media, there’s a very good chance you would have come across Gaur Gopal Das. Unlike other monks, Das has a way of connecting with people of all ages, especially today’s generation. It’s evident with the way he conducts himself and communicates his wisdom to the audience effectively.
Unlike most self-help books which can often get too deep into its ideas, Das keeps this book short and simple. He doesn’t unnecessarily complicate any of his ideas and often explains them through his anecdotes which not only make them easy to understand, but also fun to read!
If his principles weren’t already simple enough, he provides concise summaries at the end of each chapter which makes it convenient for the reader to retain the insights gained from the chapter.
Das has a way with words. He is so up-to-date with his knowledge of the world and can easily connect with people from all backgrounds using analogies pertaining to their life.
The two worksheets provided at the end of the book are quite helpful as well.
“Live your life in such a way that those who know you but don’t know God, will come to know God because they know you.”
What did I not like about the book?
This isn’t something I have said often, but the book felt quite short. For a monk filled with so much wisdom, the book does feel quite condensed.
Das simplifies his lessons in order for it to be effectively understood by his audience. However, this comes as a trade-off. When authors go deep into their ideas, they do a good job of inspiring you to take action on those ideas and that’s something in which Das comes up short.
Even though he provides solutions to many problems of life, he doesn’t do a great job in offering a practical guide to implementing those solutions effectively.
There’s a reason Gaur Gopal Das is one of the most sought-after and widely followed monks in the world, and that reason is evident in the wisdom he offers with his debut book. Although lacking in practical solutions, he does a great job in showing us that life doesn’t have to be so complicated and that we have the capacity to maintain a good, balanced life.
Filled with his anecdotes and personal experiences, the book definitely makes for an enjoyable and thought-provoking read!
