Man's Search For Meaning

Updated: Jan 24

Viktor Frankl

Written by bestselling author and elite performance expert Robin Sharma, 5 am club takes you on a journey around the world with its beautiful story and effective self-improvement techniques!

What’s it about?

Viktor was a psychiatrist who was sent to Auschwitz during World War 2. Separated from the rest of his family and having no idea if they were alive or not, he decided that he will do everything possible to survive the camps so he can return to his family one day and publish his research.

Witnessing death and suffering all around him on a daily basis gave him a different perspective on the meaning of suffering and life as a whole. He knew that if he wanted to see his wife again, he had to find a way to get through this suffering and that gave him a strong purpose which pushed him to wake up each morning with the motivation to survive at all costs.

What I liked about the book?

Viktor Frankl has been through the worst of horrors created by mankind. The fact that he was still able to find hope to survive is a testament to the capabilities of human beings.

Being a psychiatrist by profession, Viktor was able to perfectly put into words his findings during his time at the camps. This book will give you a proper idea of the horrors of World War 2.

His experience will make this book a bit of an emotional read. But he still finds a way to leave you feeling hopeful for a better future at the end of the book.

His words on the meaning of love deserve special praise. Viktor perfectly captures the essence and beauty of love.

" Our generation is realistic, for we have come to know man as he really is. After all, man is that being who invented the gas chambers of Auschwitz; however, he is also that being who entered those gas chambers upright, with the Lord's Prayer or the Shema Yisrael on his lips. "

What did I not like about the book?

The book can be a heavy read for some people due to its nature.

My verdict-

As you can see, there’s not much that I did not like about this book. Viktor does such a good job of explaining what it actually means to be alive, how we can find hope in the darkest of times and what being in love truly means. This is one of the few books that I recommend everybody reads at least once in their lifetime. One of my top reads of all time!
