Paulo Coelho

Widely regarded as one of the best books ever written, The Alchemist is an enchanting novel that has inspired a devoted following around the world. A book that teaches us about always being in pursuit of our personal legend, chasing our dreams and seeking them!

What’s it about?

Santiago, a young shepherd in Spain who is confronted by a dream of a treasure that awaits him at the foot of the pyramids of Egypt. After a strange encounter with a gypsy woman and an old king, he decides to sell his sheep and pursue the treasure. Filled with exciting new lands and a fateful encounter with the alchemist along the way, the book follows his journey of this young boy wanting to fulfill his personal legend.

What I liked about the book?

What I liked about this book was its simplicity in conveying such powerful wisdom. The book will leave you inspired to follow your own dreams and fulfill your personal legend!

The Alchemist is also well-known for being a love story that renounces the idea that romantic love must be central to people’s lives.

Another aspect of this book that is so captivating is how it emphasizes the importance of faith, hope and spirituality through the story of an ordinary boy.

One of my favourite moments of this book was when Santiago asks the old king about the world’s greatest lie. The king replied, “It’s this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate.”

This quote conveys that when we’re young, we’re free to believe that the world is open to us and we can do anything we want. As we get older, we are forced to believe that we are limited and we cannot actually pursue our dreams or passion. Take a moment to let that sink in.

“ It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting! “

What did I not like about the book?

At certain points in the book, it felt like the story was getting a little too magical. For me, it only made the entire experience more fascinating! After all, it is a fable.

For some people, it would be easy to become cynical about the practicalities of pursuing your personal legend and believing the words of a strange old king!

My verdict-

It’s easy to get caught up in all the negativity around us and let that slowly kill our optimism and our dreams to pursue our passion and live fulfilling lives. This book is a timeless reminder of how we have the capacity to fulfill our personal legend. It’s also a reminder that sometimes, we need to press pause in life and truly take in the beauty of the journey we’re making in life!
