Things No One Else Can Teach Us

Humble The Poet

What can we learn about life from a rapper who is also a blogger and social media influencer? Turns out, quite a lot! In Things No One Else Can Teach Us, Humble the Poet flips the conventional script for happiness and success, showing us how our most painful experiences can be our greatest teachers.

What’s it about?

Humble The Poet is a rapper, spoken word artist, blogger, social media influencer and an actual poet. (I didn’t know any of this. Going by the name I thought he was just a poet who makes some deep, intellectual poems about life and death)

He is also a bestselling author with his debut book “Unlearn: 101 simple truths for a better life”.

Every one of us endures setbacks, disappointments, and failures that can incapacitate us. But we don’t have to let them. Instead, we can use these events as opportunities for growth.

Humble shares raw, honest stories from his own life—from his rocky start to becoming a rapper to nearly going broke to being the victim of racial prejudice—to demonstrate how a change in mindset can radically alter our outlook. This shift in perspective—one that stops seeing the negative and starts seeing the lesson or positive spin—is what no one else can teach us. We must figure things out on our own, often through difficult and heartbreaking experiences.

He often uses confrontation with death as a premise for his lessons and how we should make the most of our lives yet not get bogged down or overwhelmed with what happens around us as it’s all insignificant in the end and not going to matter in a few years’ time.

Simple yet profound, Humble’s message is clear. While we can’t control the happenings of life, we have the power to control how we react to them. The book reminds us all that we have the power within us to transform the way we respond to everyday challenges and ultimately be our best selves.

What I liked about the book?

The one thing that makes other self-help books not work is because we see those authors as experts who have life figured out and will help us figure our lives out with their expertise. Humble isn’t like that. He’s just a normal guy, like you and me who is sharing the lessons he learned in life and hoping his experiences could help us gain perspective.

Written by a poet and spoken word artist, you would expect something different in this self-help book and you would definitely be satisfied. The poems at the end of each section are beautiful.

Humble definitely has a way with words. His writings have a depth to it that I have never come across in any self-help book till date. Reading this book would be like having a deep conversation about life with your best friend. Except that your best friend is a freaking amazing poet and a rapper!

His writings on confronting death really helped me put things into perspective and look at life with more gratitude.

“Our problems are only real because we forget we’re going to die.”

What did I not like about the book?

While beautifully written, Humble does not provide anything different from most self-help books out there. The lessons he provides in the book seem generic when compared to the other books.

Having read quite a few self-help books in the last 2 years, I expected this book to provide a refreshing perspective on handling our problems, but it does not do a great job at that.

The lessons in the book are repetitive at times which makes it a slightly dry read in between.

My verdict-

I was looking forward to reading this book for quite some time and I finally decided to order it this month. Fair to say it did not entirely meet my expectations, even though it had quite a few really good lessons.

Having said that, I honestly feel that this is still a really good self-help book mainly due to how well it is written and to the fact that the reader can easily connect to Humble and his experiences. The book will leave you with some worthwhile lessons to implement in your life.

So if you’ve read a ton of self-help books already, you could probably do without reading this. But if you’re just getting into the self-help genre or you feel you can do with a pick-me-up kinda book, this book will be one of my top recommendations for you. Beautifully written!
